Our guiding principles are:
- First do no harm
- Form strategic and synergistic alliances
- Focus on the opportunities afforded by the unique set of alliances and connections
- Seek highly leveraged opportunities for maximum impact
- Support initiatives that will not only be self sustaining but will thrive
- Create innovative research-based and evidence-based solutions
- Build an agile and scalable infrastructure to enable the above
First do no harm
Taken from the Hippocratic Oath, this principle recognises that it is not sufficient to simply intend to do good and that we should look beyond the immediate consequences of our actions. By drawing on the considerable experience and local knowledge of our members we can minimise unintended consequences.
Form strategic and synergistic alliances
Wherever practicable we will seek to collaborate with other organisations so that both organisations can concentrate on what they do best and both organisations can become more effective.
Focus on the opportunities afforded by the unique set of alliances and connections
We will ensure that Mardi adds value by carefully choosing projects where we can have greatest impact. Using our university connections we will encourage and assist students to get engaged in worthwhile projects. Students and alumni can both achieve more by working together.
Seek highly leveraged opportunities for maximum impact
One of the beauties of a catalytic reaction is that after the catalyst has done its work there is still just as much of the catalyst remaining at the end of the reaction. Acting as a catalyst is just one of the ways we will seek to maximise the impact. Giving a helping hand at the start of a young charity's life is another way of maximising impact.
Support initiatives that will not only be self sustaining but will thrive
We must avoid creating long term dependencies or we simply become part of the problem. Our members have a huge amount of collective experience and a commitment to intelligent compassion. Encouraging education and social enterprise both provide long-term benefits. Donated funds will be accompanied by mentoring and monitoring to maximise the impact.
Create innovative research-based and evidence-based solutions
Modern technology makes possible new approaches that are far more efficient than the old ways. We have access to leading-edge research to ensure that our projects are backed up by solid evidence.
Build an agile and scalable infrastructure to enable the above
Given the large number of existing alumni and the large number of new students every year, Mardi has the potential to grow into a substantial organisation. To ensure that we remain flexible and efficient we will adopt a scalable infrastructure. We will employ several means to achieve that, including use of software, choice of projects and a flat organisational structure.
